Creative Use of The Unconscious Mind

Your unconscious never rests, not even while you’re asleep. It controls your heartbeat, blood circulation, digestion and other unconscious processes that keep you alive and functioning. It controls all the vital processes and functions of your body and mind.

The unconscious mind is where all of our memories and past experiences reside.

For Freud, these were memories that have been repressed through trauma or no longer important to us (automatic thoughts). From these memories and experiences that our beliefs, habits, and behaviors are formed.

“Thus the unconscious mind can be seen,” said Freud, ”as the source of dreams and automatic thoughts (those that appear without any apparent cause), the repository of forgotten memories (that may still be accessible to consciousness at some later time), and the locus of implicit knowledge (the things that we have learned so well that we do them without thinking).”

The unconscious is a storehouse for all your deep-seated emotions that have been experienced since birth, or maybe before.

We can probe the unconscious with psycho-analysis — and there are endless arguments among theorists about what effect this has — but until something rises into our subconscious or conscious mind, we are unaware of it.

It is running us.

The subconscious is the channel, through which unconsciousness becomes conscious, and the font of your creative power and flow. More on that next time.
